Chocó Lowlands

 300-400 m (985-1,150 ft)

This tropical lowland forest, represented by Rio Silanche, is part of the Chocó bioregion, a global biodiversity hotspot. The dense forest canopy and understory host species such as the Purple-chested Hummingbird, Black-tipped Cotinga, and Scarlet-breasted Dacnis. Here, birders can observe large mixed flocks and unique species that thrive in these humid lowland conditions​

Mindo Area

1200-1400 m (3,900-4,600 ft)

The cloud forests of Mindo, are home to a rich diversity of bird species, with lush subtropical forests, rivers, and waterfalls. Species such as the Plate-billed Mountain Toucan, Club-winged Manakin, and a variety of hummingbirds, including the Velvet-purple Coronet, can be seen here. Mindo is known for its mix of primary and secondary growth, providing ideal conditions for a wide range of Chocó endemics.

Mashpi Area

750-1700 m (2,450-5,600 ft)

Mashpi-Amagusa Reserve, located in the foothills, serves as a critical transition zone between lower and higher altitudes. The reserve is home to birds like the Orange-breasted Fruiteater, Moss-backed Tanager, and Indigo Flowerpiercer. The unique elevation allows for the presence of both lowland and highland species, making it one of the most bird-rich areas of the Chocó-Andean corridor​

Highland Andes

2700-3200 m (8860-10,500 ft)

The high-elevation montane forest offers a completely different birding experience. Here, you can spot species such as the the rare Black-breasted Puffleg hummingbird, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Chesnut-naped Antpitta, and Hooded Mountain Tanager. This area feature cool, misty conditions and provide panoramic views, creating an ideal habitat for montane and paramo species​.

This is our proposed itinerary for our 7-day, 6-night Chocó-Andes birdwatching tour, based at Refugio Paz de las Aves. Birdwatching in the cloud forest requires flexibility, as the best sightings often depend on the birds and weather. Rest assured, we prioritize new and exciting bird encounters, adjusting schedules accordingly. We also tailor the experience to match your birding style—whether you prefer a relaxed pace, are focused on expanding your life list, or are in search of a specific species. Your tour will be adapted to make the most of every opportunity!

Welcome to Ecuador

Arrive at Quito International Airport, where our private transport will whisk you away to the Refugio Paz de las Aves lodge. Nestled deep in the cloud forest, the lodge provides an ideal base for the coming days of exploration. Settle in and prepare for an exciting week of birdwatching.

Refugio Paz de las Aves

Begin your mornings early with a visit to the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek, where you’ll witness the dazzling courtship displays of these vibrant males. Throughout both days, you’ll traverse the reserve’s trails in search of the five famed Antpittas: Giant, Yellow-breasted, Moustached, Chestnut-crowned, and Ochre-breasted. Your expert guides will also help spot other rare species like the Dark-backed Woodquail, Golden-headed Quetzal, and up to 150 species, our maximum sightings recorded in a single day.

Mashpi and Lower Cloud Forest

Today, we’ll visit the Mashpi-Amagusa reserve, known for its rich bird diversity and mixed flocks. Look for Orange-breasted Fruiteater, Glistening-green Tanager, and Moss-backed Tanager. See endemics like the Andean Solitaire and Indigo Flowerpiercer. Enjoy the hummingbird garden. The reserve is run by a local family, much like the Paz family, who transitioned from farming to eco-tourism to protect the land and its wildlife. Their deep connection to the forest is evident in their conservation efforts, making this visit not only a birding highlight but also a chance to support local families dedicated to preserving Ecuador’s natural heritage.

After lunch at Mashpi, we’ll return to Refugio Paz to enjoy an enchanting afternoon in the Hummingbird Garden, where you can observe species like the Violet-tailed Sylph and the Booted Racket-tail.

Rio Silanche and Zuamox

We’ll head down slope to Rio Silanche, a lowland tropical reserve, and climb the 50-foot birding tower for canopy-level views of species like Choco Trogon, Purple-chested Hummingbird, and Double-banded Greytail. The afternoon will be spent in Zuamox, looking for woodpeckers, Rufous Motmot, and an array of tanagers including Flame-rumped and Silver-throated Tanagers.

Mindo Ornithology Center and Chocolate Tasting

We’ll have an early breakfast and head out to an ornithology station in Mindo, followed by a hike to the stunning Mindo Nambillo waterfall, birding along the way. Cap off the day with a tour of a local chocolate factory, learning about the production process while sampling some of the finest Ecuadorian chocolate.

We’re not done birding yet! On this final day, we will head to the higher altitudes of Zuro Loma and Yanacocha Reserves, where we’ll seek out the rare Black-breasted Puffleg. Other species to watch for include the Sword-billed Hummingbird, Tawny Antpitta, and Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager. After a full morning of birding, we’ll return to Quito in the late afternoon for your departure.

Your Overnight Stay Helps the Forest

By choosing to stay overnight at Refugio Paz de las Aves, visitors play an active role in the reforestation of former cattle pastures and agricultural lands in the region. A portion of the fees from your stay is donated directly to Fundación Paz de las Aves, supporting their mission to restore and expand critical bird habitats.

Additionally, overnight guests have the unique opportunity to plant a tree during their visit, leaving a lasting impact on the landscape. This hands-on experience allows you to contribute to the long-term preservation of Ecuador’s cloud forest, helping to regenerate ecosystems for future generations of both birds and people.

Lodging and Rooms

Our lodge is small, with a total of 4 rooms. Three of these rooms have queen-beds. One room has two twin beds. Each room has a private bathroom with hot water and shower. These rooms share a protected, outdoor living room where we serve early morning coffee and tea.

The lodge does have wifi, though weather can impact the strength of the signal.

Our team, with over 20 years of experience serving a diverse international birdwatching audience, offer thoughtfully prepared dishes. Whether you're enjoying Ecuadorian classics or familiar international favorites, we ensure every guest has delicious meals that meet their needs, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free options with advanced notice. 

For day-trip visitors, breakfast is included, and for overnight guests, meals are included from dinner on the day of arrival through lunch on the day of departure.

Reservations and Payments

Guests wishing to book directly with Refugio Paz de Las Aves should use our online booking system, powered by WeTravel.

A deposit is required at the time of booking. If you need to cancel before making the full payment, we will do our best to refund your deposit, minus any bank transfer and administrative fees. Cancellations must be made in writing.

Full payment is due 30 days before your arrival date.

Once the full payment is made, we strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance to cover any unexpected situations. If you need to cancel, please first submit a claim to your insurance provider.

For bookings made within 30 days of arrival, full payment is required at the time of booking.

Price Adjustments

Refugio Paz de Las Aves may need to adjust rates for reservations made more than four months in advance of the travel date. Rapid changes in the global economy can affect costs for transportation, fuel, food, and other essentials. If an adjustment is necessary, we will inform you immediately.

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance. A good policy should cover reimbursement for travel expenses due to personal illness (including COVID-19), natural disasters, and/or political instability. We also highly advise buying health insurance that includes medical coverage within Ecuador and emergency evacuation. While Refugio Paz de Las Aves is within driving distance of Quito, emergency medical care is limited in our region. If evacuation is needed, you will be responsible for all associated costs.
